Are you an International student in Australia or holding any other visa that allows you to work, you can apply for an individual Tax File Number (TFN) from the Australian Tax Office (ATO). There is no compulsion to hold a TFN but if you are looking to start a job then employers would want your TFN.
Here are simple steps to follow to lodge your TFN:
- If you are a foreign passport holders, permanent migrants, and temporary visitor.
- You are already in Australia.

Please have your foreign passport and your visa details ready with you before lodging it. The information entered would be tallied with the details at the Department of Home Affairs to confirm if you are eligible for a TFN. Please have your postal address ready as well because the TFN letter will be posted to you in your nominated mailing address.
